Small Group Flexible Itinerary
Departing from Adelaide to the South East of South Australia
Day one: travel through the Adelaide Hills to Wellington and across the Murray River on the punt. Traveling south through Meningie on the shore of Lake Albert to the Coorong National Park. Visits to Parnka Point, Pelican Island viewing point (as seen in the popular childrens movie "Storm Boy"), Chinamans Well and visit Ninety Mile beach at the "42 Mile" crossing (a 4WD access point to the Southern Ocean).
Further south we visit Kingston the first of the "southern ports" famous for the BIG LOBSTER (or Crayfish). We then pass through the Limestone Coast wine region (with a stop at a winery for wine lovers, through Robe to our overnight stop at Beachport.
Beachport is a popular holiday spot on Rivoli Bay next to Lake George home to over 200 species of birds. Beachport was a whaling station 1830's and the location for the forgettable Bryan Brown movie Sweet Talker. It is home to a small lobster and deep sea trawling fleet. Accommodation is at "Bompas by the sea" (× × × 1/2) a short walk from the second longest jetty in South Australia (722m).
Day two: Travel on the beach around Rivoli Bay (weather permitting) to "Southend" a small fishing village and a short walk on the "Sea Spray Walk" along spectacular cliffs and possibly tasting some bush tucker (in season). We then continue south into the Canunda National Park (4WD access only) through a sand dune wilderness and along rugged cliffs eroded by the southern ocean.
Our next stop is Mount Gambier to visit the Lady Nelson interpretive center home of the replica 1800 brig the Lady Nelson, the famous Blue Lake and the Cave Gardens and a cave tour (depending on your interest and timetable). We then travel north to our overnight stay at Chardonnay Lodge (× × × × ) (or at the more economical Penola Hotel Motel × × ) in the heart of the renowned Coonawarra wine district, winery visits and tasting is optional. Day three: We continue north through the Coonawarra region to the World Heritage Naracoote Caves home of the 200,000 year old Diprotodont Australis fossils (a giant wombat weighing 2-3 tonnes). After the cave tour on to the Padthaway wine region and a stop at the Padthaway Homestead a two story Victorian mansion built by Scottish pioneer Robert Lawson in 1882, here you have the opportunity to try or buy some of the local produce.
We continue through the "Ninety Mile desert" now a productive agricultural region onto Murray Bridge, returning to Adelaide via the South Easter Freeway.
